3RD ANNUAL CITY OF HAMILTON “YOUTH IN CONSTRUCTION” PROGRAM
A Community coming together in Partnership to train Hamilton Youth
In May 2019 the City of Hamilton commenced the “Youth in Construction” pilot program in collaboration with the above partners. This initiative was designed to empower, educate and develop opportunities for youth and lead them to meaningful and sustainable employment in skills trades.
Out of twenty applicants, seventeen youth between the ages of 19 to 29 who may require extra support and mentoring were selected to undergo Life Skills Training as well as Construction Craft Training.
Along with training subsidy funding, Hand Association members provided employment with emphasis on mentorship in effort to help guide them to a better life.
9TH ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCEMENT

The 2023 application packages will be available in Summer 2023.
The Hamilton & District Heavy Construction (Hand) Association is pleased to announce the Annual Student Scholarship Awards available to applicants who are family members, co-op, or summer students sponsored by and Hand Association member in good standing.
The Association Board of Directors is pleased to provide a total of Three (3) Awards this year. The Young Executives Advisory Committee (YEAC) will be assembling an internal volunteer task force to evaluate all completed submissions.
The Awards will be distributed as follows:
One ($2,500.00) award and a Second award of ($1000.00) will be provided to a student enrolled in a Construction related program. In addition, One award of up to twenty five hundred dollars ($2500.00) will be provided to a student enrolled in any other program.
The Hand Association office will distribute award enrollment opportunity to its membership.
8TH HIGH SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION DAY
In collaboration with the Ontario Construction Careers Alliance, Hamilton Public School Board Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and the City of Hamilton Public Works departments, the Hand Association hosted its 8th Annual High School Construction Day.
With the growing concern of skilled labour shortage
and in an attempt to enlighten students that our industry requires an infusion of young new talent, two busloads of senior students explored a career opportunity in Heavy Construction.
Geared up in Personal Protective Equipment the students toured:
- Coco Paving Reconstruction
- Lafarge Ready Mix Plant
- Coco Paving Hot Mix Plant
- Operated Heavy Equipment Simulators
(Contest prizes donated by Nortrax Canada)
Students were provided with donated gifts and information packages outlining an overview of career possibilities in Heavy Construction.
Thanks to Labourer’s Union of North America Local 837 and International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793 for their many contributions including a “Pita Pit” lunch.
